Holy Trinity

God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy spirit. Who is who? If there is only one God how are there three of them? Are they all one? Is one greater than the other? All of these questions can be answered through by studying scripture.

Who is who?

The Father-The Father is the beginning of all. He is the authority above all, and His will is above all, even Yeshua (Jesus). He is the “Most high”, “The Ancient of Days”, and “Jehovah”, or “Yahweh”. He is the One God and is even mentioned as the God of Jesus. Jesus’ authority and power was given from God the Father through the Holy spirit. Only the Father knows the time of the end of all things, not even Jesus knows, as Jesus states this himself.

The Son-The physical being of God, the word of God, the son of God, and the son of man. Also known as “the angel of the Lord” in the old testament. Old testament appearances:

The Lord tells Abraham he will have a son-Genesis 18:1-33

The Lord stops Abraham from sacrificing his son- Genesis 22:1-19

The Lord wrestles with Jacob (Israel)- Genesis 32:22-32

Balaam and his donkey- Numbers 22:21-38

The Lord appears to Gideon- Judges 6:11-24

The Lord appears to Samson’s parents- Judges 13:1-24

See also The Prophecies of the Christ to get a better understanding of who Jesus was before he came to save us from death.

The Holy spirit-The divine power of God the Father. Also called “the wonderful counselor”, “Spirit of God”, “The seven spirits”. The Holy spirit gives life and IS life. The Holy spirit is how The Father and Son have fellowship and live in us. The Holy spirit is how we are made one in Christ, and how Christ is made one with God the Father. The Holy spirit is not spoken of as having any face, or form. He is the invisible power and love of God that lives in those who sincerely believe that Jesus died for our sins, and obey Him. The Holy spirit is given to those who ask Jesus into their hearts. We become sanctified (born again and made holy) through the Holy spirit. Also Jesus says that blasphemy against the Holy spirit is the only unpardonable sin.

If there is only one God, how are there three of them?

Just as we have a body, a soul, and a spirit so does God. God made a way to physically appear to humans (Jesus Christ). A spirit that gives life (the Holy spirit). And an infinite spiritual being that was the beginning of all. We could not even begin to understand the reason behind all that God is and does unless he would reveal that to us. Our minds and understanding are so caught up in our reality that we are not capable of understanding God’s reality and reason. But we will eventually if we come to know him through Jesus Christ. If we love and obey Him all the mysteries that were veiled will be unveiled.

Are they all one?

Yes, they are one in the same spirit. The Father may be above all but he has raised up Jesus as Christ and authority above all things living, even the angels. God desired Godly children and has made it so through His Christ. The Father has even made Jesus the Judge of the living and dead because Jesus defeated death. God the Father has also shared with us His Spirit, the Holy Spirit. Even we, if we Love and obey God and follow Christ, will have an inheritance in the kingdom of heaven. Through the Spirit we are made one with Christ. In the same way God the Father has become one with Jesus Christ through His Holy spirit.

Is one greater than the other?

Yes, God the Father is above all. He has supreme authority. He is sovereign. He gives as he decides. Jesus says that only the father knows the appointed time for the end. Jesus even says that the Father is greater than him (John 10:29). It is the Father that has given Jesus Christ authority and power (Daniel 7:13-14). The Father is even spoken of as being the God of Jesus.

Scripture

Mark 9:7

Then a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”

(Jeus is God's son, and God commands us to obey Jesus. To disobey Jesus' teachings is to disobey God. The Father has made Jesus god over all.)

Acts 5:30-32

30 The God of our fathers raised Jesus from the dead-whom you had killed by hanging him on a tree. 31 God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel. 32 We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.

(If we obey God, He gives us His Holy Spirit as witness and advisor of our lives. How do we obey God? First is to believe in Jesus. To believe that Jesus is the Christ spoken of by the prophets. If you believe in Him you must also obey what he teaches. Following Jesus isn't a once a week thing. Its an everyday relationship through obedience, prayer, and devotional time. A life of disciplined fellowship, and seperation from the worlds desires.)

2 Corinthians 1:21-22

21 Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, 22 set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.

(God has put the Holy spirit as a deposit on us. If we ask the Lord into our life and recieve His Holy spirit, but hide our faith, never to bear good fruit, we owe God back His deposit and your condemnation will be Hell just as in the parble of the talents suggests. Matthew 25:14-30)

Revelation 1:4-5

4 John, to the seven churches in the province of Asia: Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits before his throne, 5 and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.

(Him who is, who was, and is to come is the Father. The seven spirits is the Holy spirit, and Jesus is spoken of in the person. All three persons are spoken of in John's revelation as the three seperate persons whom grace and peace come from, but all act together as one, just as we have a body, spirit, and soul.)

Revelation 7:10

10And they cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.”

 Ezekiel 37:11

11 The hand of the Lord was upon me, and he brought me out by the Spirit of the Lord and set me in the middle of a valley: it was full of bones.

(The Holy spirit was not a new person or teaching after Christ. Many times OT scripture speaks of a person being full of the Spirit. Ezekiel was given a vision and God's Holy Spirit was involved. God's Spirit was not given in fullness to the world until there was a proper sacrifice for sin, and that sacrifice was Jesus the Christ. Now, Jesus judges the world and God gives His spirit out accordingly becasue salvation is given through Christ. Never before has God's Spirit of grace been so easily accessable.)

Daniel 7:13-14

13 “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. 14 He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.

(Jesus speaks of himself as the Son of man as written the Gospels. This is to refer others back to this passage showing that He is the Christ, and the one given authority, glory, and sovereign power, and the right to be worshipped.)

Zechariah 10:12

12 I will strengthen them in the Lord and in his name they will walk, declares the Lord.-

(Here the father is speaking. It is similar to psalm 110:1 when David writes, " The Lord said to my Lord, sit at my right hand-" but in this passage the Father declares that His peole will walk in the Lord's name, meaning Jesus the Christ, and in His name we do walk and we are called Christians.)

Zechariah 12:88

On that day the Lord will shield those who live in Jerusalem, so that the feeblest among them will be like David and the house of David will be like God, like the Angel of the Lord going before them.

John 1:1-5

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

(Jesus is called the word of God. Not only was he the word of God, but He was God, and through Him the Father created the universe, in as much the same way that a man marries a woman and through her life is given. Also see Proverbs 8:12-36.)

Acts 10:36-43

36 You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, telling the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. 37 You know what has happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached-38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. 39 “We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a tree, 40 but God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen. 41 He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen-by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42 He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead. 43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”

(For more about what the prophets and OT scripture say about the messiah go to the Prophecies of Christ doctrine section.)

Psalm 110:1

1The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.”

Matthew 10:19-20

19 But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, 20 For it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

(Through prayer, obedience, and humble submission to God, you will learn how to listen to the Holy Spirit He speaks to your heart, and will teach and lead you in God's ways through life.)

John 10:14-18

14 “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me- 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father-and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. 17 The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life-only to take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”

(The other sheep that are not of this pen are the others around the world, the gentiles who will recieve Christ as Lord and savior.)

 John 10:25-30

25Jesus answered, ”I did tell you, but you do not believe. The miracles I do in my Father’s name speak for me, 26 but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”

John 15:23

23 He who hates me hates my Father as well.

(Jesus said," I am the way the truth and the life, no one comes to the father except through me." (John 14:6) Only Christianity and Islam except Jesus as the Christ. Judaism does not except Jesus as the Christ, nor do any other major religions.)

John 15:26

26 “When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me.

(Anyone who has recieved God's spirit knows Jesus is Lord. It is as if you become one with the Lord, with Jesus, and with the Father, just as Jesus and the Father are one.)

John 16:13-15

13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it know to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Sprit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.

(There is wisdom and knowledge that comes from God. Wisdom that we can not grasp without understanding from the Spirit. Many people say that Christians are closed minded but honestly Christians are open minded and full of understanding from God.)

John 17:1:5

1 “Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 2 For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. 3 Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. 4 I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in the presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.

(At the end of this passage Jesus speaks of the glory that he had before the world began. Proverbs 8:12-36 speaks of such glory.)

1 Peter 1:2

To God’s elect, strangers in the world, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia, 2 Who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by his blood: Grace and peace be yours in abundance.

1 Peter 3:21-22

21 and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also-not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand-with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.

(Many believe that you cannot be saved unless you are baptised with water. You need only to be baptised by the Holy spirit. As stated in this passage baptism is an outward pledge of a good conscience toward God. Baptism usually takes place before other believers.)
